STORIE DI LUNA
Stories on the moon collected and told by Paola Serafini
directed by Luì Angelini

It’s another leg of Paola’s journey through the repertoire of traditional tales and myths around the world in search of new charms and unexpected similarities. The moon shines over the head of every being and under its pale light Japanese animals, Chinese dragons, Grimm brothers’ pays ant and hell’s souls, Irish drinkers and young African boys meet. Beside the literal meaning, myths and legends tell us about eclipses, lunar phases, nocturnal stories and spells. And more: proverbs, puns, adventurous trips real and imaginary, poems inspired by our satellite. All is told and visualized by means of common objects and images, winking at visual arts. The telling, melting words and images, recalls dreams and imaginary worlds ever present in popular repertoire.

AFRICAN TALES
traditional stories for voice and objects, by and with Paola Serafni
directed by Luì Angelini

This is a journey among the tales that western and southern African peoples have been passing down orally for centuries before researchers would record and write them down. While coming from cultures far from ours, they nevertheless communicate the pleasure of telling, the amusement created by clever plots, a winking communicative humour. The telling is warmed by the use of objects, partly coming from Africa, and natural materials as clay or sand, and small musical instruments. Voice, objects and sound cooperate creating an atmosphere that is magic and humorous in the same time. The show is both for children and adults.

… many opportunities to see good theatre in the Festival … as the startling narration of African tales performed with self-possessed effectiveness by Paola Serafini

LA FORMA DELLE STORIE (the shape of the stories)
by and with Luì Angelini
directed by Paola Serafini

There are stories coming from mythology, from fairy tales, from classical theatre, from literature. You can meet Adam and Eve, Cinderella, Macbeth, Othello and  Faust. The party is large and various, formed by famous characters. In the same time you are in a trip among tubes, mirrors, screws, matches, boxes, food, drinks, clothes and tools that we already met, but they were attending other duties. The show goes on like a recital, mixing aloud reasoning, famous dialogues, pieces of showman patter, moments of concentration, small visual and acoustic effects, building of forms because building is telling in the world and telling is building forms in the mind. Building and telling are the stones paving the path of our life.
Real world and inner images are both crossed by this path on one side are the objects forming landscapes, on the other are the stories that give meaning to our perception. Along the path they meet.

… It is the representation of a creative process made of analogy, metonymy, pun, hyperbole. It’s the staging of a process typical of contemporary visual arts. But most of all it’s a piece of good theatre, to be savoured in its components and for the general taste, just as cocktails have. Pier Giorgio Nosari - L'Eco di Bergamo, 15 Maggio 2005

FIABE SELVATICHE
Paola Serafini tells a selection from the Italian tales collected by Italo Calvino

Tales are warmed by their passing from mouth to mouth (being more descriptive the whole path is: mouth, ear, imagination, remembrance, reason and emotion, mouth) Every cycle of this path, repeated in years along the slow going seasons of country life has warmed the stories with the energy of the people that handed them down: in order to educate, to amuse, to scare, to while away the hours, to spark off dreams.
In the middle of xxth century things have begun to change quickly and Italo Calvino decided to put on paper a memory of these stories, of their eternal themes.
In turn we want to give ‘breathe’, orality, and images to these words.
These timeless words sound in a landscape made of nowadays objects and images. There are mice, foxes, wolves, geese, roosters and chickens. Before the spectators evocative images and sounds appear and join the telling voice and soon everybody is dropped into this fantastic wood.

OGGETTI DA FAVOLA
by and with Luì Angelini
directed by Paola Serafini
C
lassic tales illustrated by ordinary objects

Cinderella, Jack and the Magic Beam, Three Little Pigs are told by Luì Angelini using plastic pipes, little dolls, screws and bolts, watering cans, sponges, food boxes. Irony tints the images created by the objects taken away from their normal use and put into a narrative frame. The text is close to the original, but interlaced with puns and reference to everyday’s life. Every tale is illustrated by a different set of objects, with no hidden tricks: a naked theatre that invites the audience to try in turn at home. The light approach is directed not only to the children, but to spectators of any age.
